Late Neolithic Tool Kit
This collection of flints shows the range of stone tools used by people during the later part of the Neolithic (New Stone Age). It includes polished flint axes (top left); discoidal knives (top and 2nd row right of axes); knives (top row 4th and 5th from left and 2nd row 2nd from left); end scrapers (middle below plan-convex in top row, top row 2nd from right; and larger one, top right); a piercer (middle right); transverse arrow heads (bottom from left); a notch (bottom 2nd from left) and a core (top right). Axes were fixed in to a wooden handle and used like axes today. Discoidal (round) and other knives were used for cutting like knives today. Scrapers were used for cleaning animal skins in the process of making leather. Piercers were used for making small holes in things such as wood, bone or leather. Arrowheads were attached to wooden shafts to make arrows for hunting. A core was the raw material from which other tools could be made.
