Kyme Tower, Church Lane, South Kyme, Lincolnshire
This tower was built by Gilbert de Umfraville (1310-1381), 3rd Earl of Angus. His father had married Lucy, the heiress of William of Kyme. It stands within a large moated site. There was a house attached to the tower but this was demolished between 1720-25. The chimney pieces from it were bought by a Mr Chaplin for Blankney Hall. This tower is the earliest of a series of fortified towers built in this part of Lincolnshire. It is the only one built of stone. Later ones like Tattershall Castle, The Tower on the Moor at Woodhall Spa, the Hussey Tower at Boston and Rochford Tower at Skirbeck are all built of brick.
