King John's Palace, Southampton, Southampton

These are the remains of a medieval merchant's house. It was built in c1170. The ground floor was used for storage and the upper floor as living quarters. It originally stood on the quayside. The west wall was incorporated in the city defences after the French raid of 1338. This house is one of the most complete of the larger 12th century town houses surviving in the country.
