Hurst Castle near Milford-on-Sea, Hampshire

Hurst Castle was built by Henry VIII in 1541-4 to guard the entrance to the Solent. His castle survives as the central pivot of the fort. As a result of its strategic importance, it was further strengthened by the addition of two wings in the 19th century. The site is now in the care of English Heritage.
