Huer's House, Newquay, Cornwall
The Huer's house probably dates from the late 18th or early 19th century and has had few later alterations. It faces the sea and was used as a look-out for shoals of pilchards. The Huer would watch out for the shoals to arrive in the bay and then call out to the town by shouting 'Heva, Heva'. The fishermen would launch the boats with their long nets. The Huer then had to direct the boats so they could first locate and then surround the fish.
