Higher Shilstone Farmhouse, Throwleigh, Devon

Higher Shilstone farmhouse is a Dartmoor longhouse, with adjoining stable block. The house dates from the late 15th - early 16th century. It would originally have been open to the roof and heated by an open hearth fire, with 3 rooms divided by low partitions. The house was progressively floored over and the chimney stacks were added in the later 16th and 17th centuries. The stable block is late 17th or 18th century and looks quite different in style. Higher Shilstone is an outstanding example of a Dartmoor longhouse. It is very attractively sited and, like many of the older moorland houses, tucked tightly into the hillside.
