Greyfriars House and attached remains of Greyfriars Church, Gloucester, Gloucestershire
This is a town house that is built into the remains of a church. It was once part of a Franciscan Friary. The friary was founded in c1231. The church was rebuilt in c1518 in Perpendicular Gothic style. This was done with funds provided by the patron, Maurice Berkeley, Lord Berkeley. After the Dissolution in 1538 the buildings of the friary were adapted to various uses. In 1643 they were severely damaged in the siege of the city by Royalist forces. By 1721 only bits of the church survived. In the later 1700s houses were built within the walls. Then in c1810 a large house in a classical style was built into the west end of the medieval remains. This is what can be seen today.
