George Darwin, Down House, Downe, Greater London

A photograph from Down House of George Darwin aged 6 in 1851. George Darwin (1845-1912) was Charles Darwin’s second son. He was born at Down House in 1845. He went to Cambridge University and became a mathematician and astronomer. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in June, 1879 and won their Royal Medal in 1884 and their Copley Medal in 1911. He also won the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1892, and later (1899–1901) served as president of the society. He married and had two sons and two daughters.
