Gatehouse, Whalley Abbey, Whalley, Lancashire

Postcard showing the north west gateway at Whalley Abbey covered in ivy. Two gatehouses survive; this one dates from the early 1300s and the other from the late 1400s. The abbey was founded in 1296. It was a Cistercian abbey. The monks had many disputes with nearby Sawley and other monasteries. The abbey was dissolved in 1537. Only the outline of the church remains. The infirmary block and other buildings became part of a mansion built by the Assheton family in the late 1500s. Part of that building has been used as a Diocesan Conference Centre. This property is now in the care of English Heritage (2010). Find out more.
