Former Workhouse, Crossgate, Durham
Durham Union workhouse was built in 1837 on Crossgate. It was originally intended to accommodate 150 inmates and the architect was George Jackson. In about 1870 an infirmary block and fever wards were added. In 1875 new casual wards and a block for the infirm were built. The workhouse later became Durham Poor Law Institution and then Crossgate Hospital. After the start of the National Health Service in 1948, it became St Margaret's Hospital. Some of the surviving buildings have now been converted to housing. Others have been used by local community organisations.
