Former Leazes Board School, Stanley, Durham
In 1890 Tanfield School Board was formed and Board Schools were built in most villages in the area. This school was built in 1893 in a Jacobean style and opened in 1894 for the education of children from the age of five to fourteen. Many board schools were built after the 1870 Education Act. The school boards were able to collect money from local rates (taxes) to pay for providing schools. Many boards employed architects to design their schools and developed a local style. In 1968 this building became known as the Community Centre and came under the management of the Burnopfield Community Assocition which was formed in 1966.
