Feversham Street First School, Bradford, West Yorkshire
This school was built as a Board school in 1873, commissioned by the Bradford School Board (founded in 1870). Architecturally it was built in an expensive Gothic Revival style with Early English details. The 1870 Education Act created the first state system of elementary schools, leading to a massive increase in the number of schools. School Boards were set up to provide schools, they were supported by household rates. This school later (1876) became the first mixed Higher Elementary Board School in England.
