Engine Winding House, Nailsea, North Somerset

This was originally the winding engine house of Glassworks Pit (coalmine). It is now one of the few examples remaining in the coalfield. A glassworks was established at Nailsea by John Robert Lucas in 1788 after moving from Bristol. This was because Nailsea provided room to expand, easily available coal and convenient sources of lime and sand. The first furnace was so successful that a second was added in 1790. The works closed in 1873 (mainly due to the increasing difficulty in obtaining coal from the Nailsea mines).
