Engine House at Wheal Coates, St Agnes, Cornwall
Towanroath Engine House held a beam engine to pump water out of the deeper levels of the mine which ran out beneath the sea. The engine house was built in the late 19th century and partly rebuilt in the 20th century by the National Trust. Wheal Coates was a tin and copper mine. It opened in 1802. In 1872 the mine had three engine houses. It operated to a depth of 90 fathoms and employed 70 people. The mine closed in 1889 and an attempt was made to reopen it in 1911. It finally closed in 1914. The cliffs in this area have many similar ruined buildings.
