East End Farm Cottage, Moss Lane, Pinner, Greater London
This is one of the best surviving medieval buildings in Greater London. It is timber framed with whitened brick infill between the timber frame. It dates from the early 15th century and was originally an open hall house with a central hearth. It was gradually adapted to become a 2 floored house with fireplaces by the 17th century. Open hall houses were basically one room with a hearth in the centre. Smoke from the fire found its way out through the roof. Eventually fireplaces and chimneys were built. It is possible to see on this house that the chimney has been built onto the outside wall of the original hall.
