Dunstain Staithes, Gateshead, Tyne and Wear

North Eastern Railway Company Coal staithes built in 1893, and still one of the largest wooden structures in the world. Staithes allowed pit owners to transport their coal directly into the holds of ships without the need for the smaller vessels, or 'keels', previously used.
