Dulwich Picture Gallery and Mausoleum, Camberwell, Greater London
This Art gallery and mausoleum was built in 1811-14 and designed by Sir John Soane. Some of the galleries were originally almshouses. It was the first public art gallery in England, founded by Sir Francis Bourgeois. Much of the collection was brought together by Noel Desenfans who was the art dealer for King Stanislas of Poland. The mausoleum contains the remains of Mr and Mrs Desenfans and of Sir Francis Bourgeois. The gallery was badly damaged during WW2 and had to be repaired and partly rebuilt. It reopened in 1953.
