Dewent Dam, Derwent Lane, Derwent, Derbyshire

The dam was built in 1902-16 to create the Derwent reservoir. Edward Sandeman was the Engineer. The dam is 1,110 feet long and 114 feet high. The base is 178 feet thick tapering to 10 feet at the top. It is one of three large reservoirs constructed by the Derwent Valley Water Board. They provide water for Sheffield, Derby, Nottingham and Leicester. There is a small museum in the west tower of the dam celebrating the connection to the Dambusters raid of WW2.

This water tower at Battys corner is dated 1916. It was built from reinforced concrete for Hull Corporation Waterworks. A plaque is inscribed: CITY OF HULL WATERWORKS WITHENSEA AND SOUTH HOLDERNESS SUPPLY 1916. The base contains pumps and a 300,000 gallon tank. The upper tank, of 100,000 gallon capacity, surrounds the central tower which carries a spiral staircase and pipe-work dated 1914. Read official list description.
