Deer House, Auckland Castle Park, Bishop Auckland, Durham

This area has been a Deer Park since at least 1181. The park was enlarged in 1350. The Deer House was park of a large re-landscaping of the park in Georgian times. It was built as a Gothic Revival 'eyecatcher' in 1760 . It provided deer with shelter and food, and had grounds for picnics and rooms for enjoying the view. This property is now in the care of English Heritage (2010). Find out more.
