Curzon Cinema, Clevedon, North Somerset
This cinema was built as a Cine-variety theatre, meaning it had both a cinema and stage. It was built in 1920-22. It is on the site of an earlier cinema built in 1912. The walls, ceiling and proscenium arch are entirely lined in painted pressed metal decorative sheets, perhaps of tin. This is the earliest and most complete example of such a system known to survive in England. The use of pressed metal or tin was suited to cinema construction because it was non-flammable at a time when nitrate film posed a serious fire risk to such buildings.
