Claremont House, Esher, Surrey
This house was built in 1770. It was built by the noted architects and designers Henry Holland, Lancelot (Capability) Brown and John Soane for Lord Clive. Lord Clive is better known as 'Clive of India', founder of Britain's Indian Empire. There was already a house on this estate when he bought the land. It had been designed, built and lived in by Sir John Vanorough less than 50 years earlier. However Lord Clive considered it 'old fashioned' and spent over £100,000 on this new house. Sadly he never lived in it.
