This building was originally built as the Royal Manchester Institution. It was built in 1824-35 by Sir Charles Barry in a Greek Ionic style of architecture.Many 19th century public buildings were built in this classical style of architecture as a symbol of their importance. The galleries inside were redecorated in a High Victorian Style in the 1890s. This was to enhance the significant collection of paintings from this period.
