A view looking east along Cheapside showing the road crowded with horse drawn vehicles. The tall building in the backgroud is the St Mary le-Bow church which was considered the second most important church in the City of London after St Paul's Cathedral. A church has stood on the site since medieval times, it was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666 and rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren. It was also damaged by bombing during World War Two. It is said that to be a 'cockney' you must born within the sound of 'cow bells' - referring to the bells of this church.
