Castle Acre Priory, Norfolk

A view of the ruins of the Cluniac monastery of St Mary, St Peter and St Paul. The earliest part of the priory dates back to the 12th century but the monastery was founded earlier in 1090 by William de Warrene, the second Earl of Surrey. The priory was dissolved by King Henry VIII in 1537 and granted to Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk. By 1558 the buildings were being demolished. The prior's lodgings were retained for use as a house. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2010).
