Carey's Mansion, Carisbrooke Castle, Carisbrooke, Isle of Wight
Reconstruction drawing of soldiers in the courtyard in front of Carey's Mansion in the late 1590's. Carey's Mansion was built in 1584-6 by George Carey. He was queen Elizabeth I's cousin and built the mansion to provide himeself with grander accommodation, befitting his status as Captain of the Isle of Wight. It has 13 rooms and was as grand as many country houses built at this time. However by 1723 a survey of the castle tells us that the mansion, then known as the Officer's Quarters, had fallen into ruin and been demolished. This is possibly because such a large amount of grand accommodation was no longer needed. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2011). Find out more.
