Captain Cook School, The Grove, Middlesbrough
The Captain Cook School and School House was built as a Parochial School in 1849/50. It was designed by R.C. Carpenter (London) in a Tudor Gothic style. It was built with stone taken from the remains of Marton Lodge which was built in 1790 and destroyed by fire around 1832. The Infants' room and rear porch were added in 1884. There is an inscribed slate tablet, dated 1812, in memory of Captain James Cook, R.N., F.R.S. It is on the north wall of the school but was originally in the Church of St. Cuthbert. The school closed around 1961 and the building was used as a private house and nursery school.
