Butter Cross, St George's Street, Dunster, Somerset
The Butter Cross probably once stood at the north end of the High Street. Local tradition says it was moved here in 1825. Crosses similar to this once stood in the centre of towns and villages. They acted as boundaries and as memorials. They naturally became places where merchants would strike deals. The Butter Cross probably got its name from the fact that butter was sold near its original site. This property is in the care of English Heritage (2011) and managed by The National Trust.
