Building connected with the life of a slave, Overton, Lancashire
This house near Sunderland Point, Lancashire, was originally the brewhouse to a pub called the Ship Inn. A black enslaved or cabin boy called Sambo, is said to have died here in 1736. Very little is known about Sambo's life but it is thought he arrived on a ship from the West Indies in 1736. He died only a few days later and was buried nearby by his fellow sailors. Sixty years later a local Headmaster heard the story and had a plaque made to commemorate him.
