Bourne Estate, Clerkenwell Road, Camden Town, Greater London
This housing estate was built for the London County Council in 1901-3. It was designed by the LCC Architect's Department in a free Classical style, with Arts and Crafts touches. They were mainly 5-storey flats with balcony access. The Bourne Estate is the third of the three key estates built by the London County Council in the years of its greatest innovation. The Bourne has an international significance as the model for the much admired and highly influential public housing erected in Vienna in the 1920s. The Viennese model was copied in some of the private mansion blocks in central London built in the 1930s.
