Black Middens Bastle House, Bastle, Northumberland
This building was built in the late 15th or early 16th century. It is what is known as a bastle house. This type of house was fortified, to protect it from border raids by the Scots. They were two or three storeys high. The lower floor is always used to house animals and the upper floor(s) were for living in. The entrance is on the first floor. This property is now in the care of English Heritage (2010).
