Berwick Barracks, Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland
This is the Barracks Square with cannons on display . In 1717, the Board of Ordnance ordered the construction of a barracks in Berwick. They were built between 1719 and 1721. They were designed to accommodate 600 men and 36 officers. There are three separate buildings that make up three sides of a quadrangle. The fourth side is a high wall and a gatehouse. They are said to be the earliest barracks built in Britain. This property is now in the care of English Heritage (2010).
