Belle Isle, Windermere, Cumbria
Also known as Island House this was the first house in the Lake District to be built in a picturesque style designed to make the landscape look more romantic. It was designed by John Plaw in 1774 and is unique in having a circular plan. There is a dome with a lantern on the top of the building, an Ionic entrance portico with 4 columns and Venetian windows. The whole island was landscaped by Thomas White in the 1780s to look romantic from the lake.
