Beaconsfield Buildings, Randells Road, Islington, Greater London

These blocks of late Victorian tenements were built for labourers (unskilled workers)and artisans (skilled workers). They date from around 1879 and were designed to house 2,000 people. They were named after the Prime Minister, Lord Beaconsfield. Several similar schemes were built in different areas of London based on the ideas of George Peabody who believed in providing decent housing for working people at affordable rents. They were demolished in 1970.
