Bailey Gate, Bailey Street, Castle Acre, Norfolk
This gateway was part of the defences around Castle Acre Castle. It is the partly ruined northern gate, known as the Bailey Gate. It stands at the northern end of Bailey Street. It dates from c1200. It is built of mortared flint with stone dressings. Although now roofless it still stands to full height, with twin drum towers. Throughout the 12th and 13th centuries the castle was an important administrative centre, but by 1397 it was derelict. These remains are now in the care of English Heritage (2010).
