Backbarrow Iron Works, Haverthwaite, Cumbria

A charcoal fired blast furnace in operation between 1711-1963, built on the site of an iron forge and bloomery that operated from 1685-1711. The works closed in the 1970s, although much of the equipment of the last survival of the charcoal furnaces of Great Britain is still in place.
