Ambulance Station, Highlands Hospital, Worlds End Lane, Enfield, Greater London
This building was the Ambulance Station to the former Northern Convalescent Fever Hospital. It was built between 1885-7 and administered by the Metropolitan Asylums Board (MAB). Fevers, including smallpox, typhus and enteric fever were one of the greatest problems cities had to deal with at this time. Proposal to build a fever or smallpox hospital often led to protests from local residents, who were fearful of catching the diseases. The MAB took all reasonable precautions and the regulations of the hospitals were severe.
