Alcock Monument, Barlow Moor Road, Manchester, Greater Manchester
This monument to Flight Commander Sir John W. Alcock was put up in c1920. He was the pilot of the first aircraft to make a non stop transatlantic flight. It was in a Vickers Vimy biplane from St Johns, Newfoundland to Clifden, Ireland on the 14th-15th June 1919 (1890 miles in 15 hours 57 minutes). He was knighted on the 21st June 1919 by H.M. King George V. He died in an accident, while flying a Viking flying boat from Weybridge to the Paris Aircraft Exhibition on December the 18th 1919. He was born in Manchester in 1892.
