A sculpture of the devil, by Jacob Epstein, being hoisted into position at Coventry Cathedral, Coventry, West Midlands

The new Coventry Cathedral was the first British cathedral to be built after the Second World War. It replaced the old St Michael's Cathedral, which was damaged during the war. The new cathedral was built between 1956 and 1962 by John Laing plc. Jacob Epstein created a sculpture called 'St Michael's Victory over the Devil' to be displayed outside the new cathedral. The sculpture shows the devil at the feet of St Michael the angel, symbolising the victory of good over evil. Epstein died in 1959; this was one of his last sculptures.
