Unpath’d Waters Endorsed by UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030

We are thrilled that Unpath’d Waters has been formally endorsed by the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030 – the Ocean Decade – as a Decade Contribution. This endorsement signifies global recognition for the progress that Unpath’d Waters is making towards three Ocean Decade Challenges:

  • Challenge 8: Create a digital representation of the ocean
Through multi-stakeholder collaboration, develop a comprehensive digital representation of the ocean, including a dynamic ocean map, which provides free and open access for exploring, discovering, and visualizing past, current, and future ocean conditions in a manner relevant to diverse stakeholders.
  • Challenge 9: Skills, knowledge and technology for all
Ensure comprehensive capacity development and equitable access to data, information, knowledge and technology across all aspects of ocean science and for all stakeholders.
  • Challenge 10: Change humanity’s relationship with the ocean
Ensure that the multiple values and services of the ocean for human wellbeing, culture, and sustainable development are widely understood, and identify and overcome barriers to behaviour change required for a step change in humanity’s relationship with the ocean.

These challenges are linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda, showing how maritime heritage can directly address our world’s most pressing needs. In short, Unpath’d Waters is now an acknowledged part of the Ocean Decade’s mission: transformative ocean science solutions for sustainable development, connecting people and our ocean.

Unpath’d Waters will contribute to the Ocean Decade as part of the wider Cultural Heritage Framework Programme, led by the Ocean Decade Heritage Network and supported by one of our partners, Lloyds Register Foundation. As Unpath’d Waters is UK-based, it also forms part of the UK’s overall contribution to the Ocean Decade, co-ordinated by Ocean Decade UK.

Unpath’d Waters is increasing interaction with maritime heritage by making it easier to research and easier for the public to discover and share stories. As part of the Ocean Decade, we are now better able to share our experiences and advances on a global stage.
