An introduction to linear frontiers (a linear monument designed to define the territory of one polity against different or potentially hostile polities or groups).
There are two major linear frontiers in England, which are among the best-known ancient monuments in Britain. They are Hadrian’s Wall, built under the Roman emperor Hadrian from AD 122, and occupied and used for some 300 years, and Offa’s Dyke, associated with Offa, King of Mercia (AD 757-796).
