Description

A collection of 12 black and white negatives from completed Woolaway prefabricated houses, Barnstaple, Devon. The Temporary Housing Act of 1944/5 was intended to alleviate the acute housing shortages of the immediate postwar years. The Ministry of Works was the government department tasked with the organisation and efficiency of the push for housing construction. A number of prefabricated designs and construction methods were proposed to the Ministry of Works, of which the Woolaway house, designed by a company of the same name, was one. Woolaway houses were constructed using pre-cast reinforced (PRC) concrete panels. They could be constructed as both homes or bungalows. The images show details of the interior and exterior of the properties.

A number of Woolaway prefabricated houses were built on the Oakland Park Estate, to the south of Barnstaple. The properties were built on, or near Woodville.

The original Ministry of Works storage envelope lists the operator as “E” and the division as ““A.D.W/A”.

4 of the 12 images were catalogued and digitised as part of a 2020 project.
