A collection of 16 black and white negatives showing the construction of traditional brick houses for the Ministry of Works at an unspecified location in Derby. The Ministry of Works was the government department tasked with the organisation and efficiency of the push for postwar housing construction. The Temporary Housing Act of 1944/5 was intended to alleviate the acute housing shortages of the immediate postwar years, mostly through the construction of prefabricated, modular housing. Traditional brick methods of construction were used alongside the experimental prefabricated models. It is unclear where exactly in Derby these homes were built. The volume contains 6 negatives depicting the exterior street scene, these were not originally marked and included as part of the volume. They have now been included and counted as part of this volume
The original Ministry of Works storage envelope lists the operator as “D” and division as “A.D.W/A”. It also records only 10 negatives within the collection. There are in fact 6 smaller format negatives that have been added to the collection, non-have been catalogued or digitised and they’re not marked.
3 of the 16 images were catalogued and digitised as part of a 2020 project.
This is part of the Sub Series: PSA01/04/H Housing; within the Series: PSA01/04 Negatives; within the Collection: PSA01 Property Services Agency
