Description

329 drawings of Brougham Castle and the Countess Pillar dating from 1927 to 2006 and including four oversized drawings.

The earliest drawings are site plans from the late 1920s. Between 1930 and 1934 the Office of Works produced seven drawings for wrought iron fittings and in around 1934 they produced eight drawings of designs for a custodian's house.

Between 1979 and 1983 the Department of the Environment made six drawings of designs for a museum display and store for the carved stonework from the Roman Fort.

In July 1983 Plowman Craven & Associates made a survey of the site resulting in five drawings. They made a second survey of the site for the Department of the Environment in 1985 resulting in twenty-four drawings.

In 1984 AMDO produced a four-drawing survey of the Countess Pillar for English Heritage, and in 1985 English Heritage produced a further five drawings of the pillar.

Between 1985 and 1990 the Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies, York, produced eleven photogrammetric surveys for English Heritage.

From 1987 to 1994 the Cumbria and Lancashire Archaeology Unit of Lancaster University made a fifty-drawing survey of the castle based on photogrammetric drawings by the Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies York and the 1985 site survey by Plowman Crave & Associates. They also completed a thirty-eight drawing survey of mouldings from the castle in 1992.

In 1989 R. B. Graham made four plans for a new layout of the sales office and Lowe Rae Architects made six drawings of external works for English Heritage in 1997 and 1998.

There are also twenty-three drawings produced for the book 'Brougham Castle, Cumbria: a survey and documentary history' by Summerson, Trueman and Harrison, published in 1998 by Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society.
