Description

The collection comprises a comprehensive photographic and written record of York Minster and its decoration and monuments compiled between 1945 and 2003 by the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England. The majority of the collection, however, dates from 1967 to 1988).

The bulk of the collection (RCH01/133/01) comprises 957 files containing over 10000 black and white and colour photographs and over 3000 handwritten inventory cards. The files also contain correspondence, colour transparencies, press cuttings, plans, photocopies, and research notes.

Also in the collection is a set of drawings (RCH01/133/02), large format photographs (RCH01/133/07), negatives (RCH01/133/03, 04 and 05), and colour transparencies (RCH01/133/06) that complement the files.

Handlists of the files, some of the negatives, and the transparencies are available.

Archival History

The collection was transferred to the NMR by Sarah Brown, Head of Research Policy for Palaces of Workshop for English Heritage in June 2008.

Some of the files relate to EH York Minster publication of 2003 and include reports mostly by RCHME staff including R.M. Butler and E.A. Gee - who executed this research in the 1970s and 1980s.
