The Cold War Project was initiated by the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England and then continued by English Heritage after their merger in 1999. The project was founded primarily on archaeological and architectural field work rather than documentary evidence of defence installations built in Britain between 1946 and 1989. Categories covered include structures built for air defence, nuclear deterrent, defence research establishments, defence manufacturing sites, emergency civil government, emergency provisions stores, communications and United States Air Force sites.
