Description

Before redevelopment in the 1960s, Whitehaven was a town which had been one of the most complete post-medieval planned towns in England. RCHME survey staff recorded various buildings between 1983-1985, and Sylvia Collier, an Architectural Investigator with RCHME, also carried out a study investigating surviving houses, with an analysis of the town's physical, economic and social development. The book "Whitehaven 1660-1800" was published in 1991.

(BF104575 contains extra material relating to the project e.g. photographic copies of plans from Cumbria Record Office which could not be incorporated into individual site files).
