The collection contains photographic prints of furnishings and furniture used in government offices, embassies or consulates. The images show items mostly on their own with a blank background and were originally mounted in an album for reference purposes. Items can range from the very formal or decorative to post-war functional austerity.
The subject of the images can be roughly divided into the categories that follow and quantities are shown in brackets: electrical and candle light fittings: wall mounted (9), table and floor mounted (26), ceiling mounted (17); clocks (6); tables (16); chairs, sofas and stools (24); cupboards, bureaus, chests and dressing tables (21); glassware (8); tableware and vases (10); dining table and chairs (2); mirrors (3); carpet clips (1); trolley (1); folding screen (1); wooden tray (1); and unidentified items (2).
A few prints are annotated with foreign embassy locations or have other historical provenance such as loans from the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Transferred from NMR Library Rare Book Room in 2007.Prints were originally mounted in a blue album with DOE Historical Research Unit bookplate.
Negatives for some of these prints are present among the 'S' series negatives of the Ministry of Works held by the NMR. The 'S' series contains record photography of supplies that the ministry was responsible for.
