A series of mounted prints (a very small number are not mounted) collected by the Office of Works, recording government related sites in London in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. They represent probably one of the first photographic records of London Government sites.
The photographs cover a wide variety of buildings including offices, houses and shops and they largely record changes to a site or area, usually through the demolition of old buildings and the construction of new. Sites include the Palace of Westminster and Westminster Abbey, Hampton Court Palace, Somerset House, the Old War Office Building, the Public Record Office and Burlington House. In addition there are also a number of photographs of Dover Castle in the early 20th century.
Commemorative monuments and statues of public figures such as Spencer Compton Cavendish, 8th Duke of Devonshire, Sir James Franklin and Sir James Outram also feature in the collection. Likewise events such as the preparation of Westminster Abbey for the coronation of Edward VII and the translation of the Wellington Arch in Hyde Park Corner are recorded.
The prints are by a variety of photographers and most images are attributable to a person or company such as Bedford Lemere, A. E. Walsingham and S. B. Bolas, however, the photographers for a small number of prints are unidentified.
The collection was acquired by NMR Archives before 2006.
