Series of 136 albums mainly on major ecclesiastical buildings, such as cathedrals, abbeys across the country, and domestic and commercial/industrial buildings such as markets, galleried inns, weatherboarded houses and former mercantile and dock buildings with a London emphasis. Often based on a particular building, buildings of a county or buildings by type, these albums contain original photographic prints, postcards, engravings, drawings, cuttings and extracts from an enormous range of antique books and journals, correspondence and almost every piece of archive Gerald Cobb could collect. Combined with Gerald Cobb's meticulous and detailed annotations based on an unparalleled knowledge of the subject , these albums document the most minute changes to buildings that otherwise appear fossilised in time. For example, through a closely dated series of illustrations and photographs, Mr Cobb has demonstrated how the lighting in St Paul's Cathedral was subtly modified over a period of less than thirty years. Similarly, the lighting on the yard to the front of St Paul's is examined with forensic rigour, highlighting several different scenes in the mid to late 19th century.
The earliest items are either copies of medieval maps or contemporary engravings of the 18th century. Most coverage dates from the 19th to first half of the 20th century.
