Description

The house was built by Horace Walpole between 1749 and 1979 with William Robinson and James Essex. The house has an L-shaped plan of an elaborate and irregular facade, with the two main fronts facing the south and east. The range extending east has a five bay, two storey section, with a single recessed bay to the right and a three-sided bow window. The east facade of this wing has three bays, with a three storey bay on the left, and recessed three storey central bay with two storey bow window and stepped gable. The right bay has two tall storeys. In the background is the conical roof of the 1777 turret, which is situated in the north-east corner of the house. Extending south is a 19th century section added by Lady Waldegrave, which encases the central circular tower. It has a tall two storey section of three bays, with the central bay canted. The roofs throughout are embattled.
